Skopje is a major transport hub in the southern Balkans. It lies at the junction between the E 65 and the E 75, has a commercial airport and railway links to Greece, Serbia and Kosovo. The importance of Skopje is underlined by the definition of major trans-European transport networks specified by the the EU Commission. Two of these so called Pan European Corridors meet at Skopje:

  • Corridor VIII links Bari in Italy with Varna in Bulgaria, connecting the Central Southern Mediterranean Basin with The Black Sea

  • Corridor X links Salzburg in Austria with Thessaloniki in Greece, connecting Middle and Southeast Europe with the Middle East

In consequence Skopje is earmarked as a crucial transshipment center in southeastern Europe.
